A WiFi QR code encodes everything a phone needs to join a network: the SSID (network name), the security type, and the password. Scanning it prompts the phone to connect automatically — no typing, no reading out a passphrase character by character.
What gets encoded
The code stores three values in a standard format most modern phones and tablets recognize natively:
SSID— the network name, exactly as it appears in device settings.Password— the network password in plain text.Security— the encryption type: WPA/WPA2, WPA3, or none.
The phone reads these fields and passes them directly to the operating system's network stack.
Where it works and where it does not
Most phones released in the last several years can scan a WiFi QR code with the native camera app and connect without any additional steps. Older devices may need a third-party app to interpret the encoded format. Enterprise networks that use certificate-based authentication cannot be joined via a QR code — the format only supports pre-shared key networks.
When the password changes
A static QR code cannot be updated after it is generated. If the network password changes, a new code needs to be generated and the old one replaced everywhere it was printed or displayed. For home networks this is rarely a problem. For a guest network in a shared space, consider how often the password rotates before printing the code on a permanent surface — a replaceable card holder is easier to update than a sticker on the wall.
